Although not by any means an expert I have had several electricians in my home to add plugs and upgrade service and no one (including my insurance company) has ever hinted that I should replace the wiring in my house just because the house was built in 1929. My house was very much a first class house when it was constructed. The plumbing and wiring is original except for the occasional new kitchen. The wires are so thick compared to todays wiring that there is no comparison. the insulaltion on them is fine. It is actually a little hard to work with because it is so thick. I would think that 20 AMPs while more convenient (won't trip) is not safer. You want them to trip. That is why fuses are safer. They will always blow but the circuit breaker might not trip. It requires a mechanical action. That is why I would have someone you trust look at it. The pipes in my house are mostly original. Just replaced as needed when upgrades come along. No plumber has said anything bad about them or suggested replacing them except as part of a bigger project. Some were actually in the outside walls. There is still one left in the downstairs bathroom. It freezes at -11F. That is inconvenient. They never break. I can't turn off the outside water because the shutoff is so old that it won't turn without a wrench and I don't want to break it. Not a problem. The pipes don't break. I am sure there are reasons to get things that are new but not in every case. I had a leaky shower pan about 15 years ago. The plumber said that he was replacing ones in houses from the '20s and houses from the '60s because the modern construction was not as good. I have replaced two faucets in the last 18 years. One is the top of the line kitchen faucet installed in '99 (it broke in half) and the other was in that new shower (It lasted about ten years which was a lot longer than the shower head). Both had a lifetime gaurantee so all I had to do was the labor. Don't rush in. Get advice. That said old houses require a lot of upkeep just like old Saabs. You have to pick your battles.
