Both my in-laws and my dad's side of the family have houses that have fuses in them. The work just fine. Like any other circuit you can overload them and the fuse pops. No problem. In some respects they are more reliable than circuit breakers since they don't go "bad" and pop repeatedly. Also, if you blow a fuse you replace it with a new one. Circuit breakers get reset. Circuit breakers are a convience, no spares needed... I've lived in houses that had both fuses (in the old side) and circuit breakers (in the new construction side).
Also, my father in law is a retired electrician and he would *never* put up with anything that was not 1) save, and 2) serviceable.
