Yeah it's really fun when your paycheck leaves... From the other side of the transaction, being a Saab salesman/manager myself, I didn't really read any outrageous treatment into your narrative. I bet the salesman and the salesmanager really enjoyed watching their paycheck, you, walk out the door.
Sounds like they marked a car all the way down to a nothin' profit and then you still wanted it for $1,000 less than that. Whose to say whether that nothing' profit price was fair or not. Dealers do get too deep in cars from time to time, but generally not.
Focus on the "value" and suggesting something cheaper are very valid points for discussion. There must have been something else going on to piss you off. I mean what purpose would it serve for the sales manager to go down that road?
Some folks take negotiating too seriously to the point of taking offense if their offers/demands aren't met. Some folks use this as their buying weapon, offense and indignity, consciously or not, sorta' a get tough attitude.
As a salesmanager you never know how people are going to take you. You do have to push a little, present some alternative ideas, explain things again, and often reality doesn't sit well with folks. A sales manager is likely to have a pretty big ego (which offends some people all by itself) so as to bounce back from negtive episodes with customers which is gonna' happen from time to time.
I bet there are two salesmanagers at the dealer and the alternate one would be happy to handle your sale, assuming you can agree to terms.
