...I got up and walked for the door after driving 300 miles to see a Durango at a 5 star Dodge dealer. Because I drove so far, the dealer/manager thought he had a fish on the line.

Prior to my trip, I had run all the numbers and found the car was never in Louisiana, was well maintained, and the prior owner was literally a 70 year old man who wanted to trade it in to get the newer body style. I told the them that their price was higher than what I was willing to spend, even if they thought it was fair. I reminded them that it was a 2003 car being sold in December 2005, so it was about to be a 3 year old car (even though it only had only 18K miles on it). I also reminded them it was an SUV in the era of rising gas prices. They tried to sit pat. I politely thanked them for their time and asked the best way to the freeway. As I was getting up the manager/owner strolled away and then back up to me and said I could have my price. He then also reduced the cost of a full factory warranty (my cousin sells Dodges, and told me I got a steal). They were really quite reasonable. I still keep in touch with them. Like you Mike, they are really nice guys. They were looking to maximize their profit.

Sometimes I think the sales personel think we car buyers are so in love with cars that we are going to walk back in. I was ready to walk, despite the fact that this was my ideal car and I knew I would never get another 18K SUV like this.

Moral, you need to be ruthless when you are buying a car, and need to be willing to walk away. Salesmen do what is good for them, so it is no surprise that we need to do what is good for us. If we handle it maturely and politely, we can all wind up somewhere in the middle.
