The whole dealer scenario is getting really out of hand in the US. There is so much pressure for salesmen to "make numbers" they will say and do anything that will get you to write a check.
I personally find it reprehensible that salespeople won't tell you the actual price, just the monthly payments - and often they aren't even clear about the terms. I had a friend call me from a Honda dealership once asking me if she was getting a good deal - at first it sounded alright until she read the fine print and we found they were financing her for 84 months. The "numbers" would have been good for a 5 year, borderline acceptable for a six year, but they were quoting seven year (!!!) financing on a Focus - she would have ended up paying tangibly more than the car was new! Considering Ford was offering rebates and low financing at the time, the whole deal was a MAJOR rip off.
I would guess the average car buyer today is really not equipped to deal with a car dealer. They play so many games, and have so many numbers to swizzle and make appealing it's hard to keep track of what's really going on. Eventually I suspect it will straighten itself out, but in the meantime the best advice is to just not take it personally.
