I'm going to disagree with some of what you said. You don't need to be ruthless when buying anything. You do need to know what you want to (or can) spend on whatever you are purchasing (house, car, insurance, clothing..) and what you are looking for in that item.
In fact the more "ruthless" you become the more attitude you get back. If you are dealing with a salesmen that is only doing what is good for them you are in the wrong place.
When I was in the USN and worked in the high desert there were two motorcycle shops in town. One just outside the main gate, walking distance. The other was on the other end of town. It was really only about 4 miles further. The closer shop did more military business than the other, it was closer to the main gate after all. They also did long term loans (higher interest rate) and sold insurance there too. The other shop suggested you get insurance via normal channels (but they could get it like the close shop), and also suggested doing credit union or bank loans for the purchase as they usually had a better rate.
The only reason the first shop stayed in business as long as it did was a constant flow of new and non-repeat business. Repeat business was limited to owners of that brand needing parts. As the military got smaller the crop of new prospects did too. The other shop survived because they got repeat business because they took care of their customers. They gave reasonable service for a reasonable price.
The real moral of the story is understand what you want (do some research), understand what you are willing to pay, find a place that you like (people and product), and work for a mutually acceptable transaction.
When try to drive a deal that isn't possible you'll feel isn't being truthfull. Also, if you drove 300 miles to purchase a car the dealer knows that you will be going to a closer service center (anyone would!) and that follow-on parts & service business is not in the cards.
