Silly to buy a new PC with XP instead of Vista?

Hey guys,
Just wanted to get some opinions on this. I guess I'm not fully convinced of Vista's stability and worry about memory usage issues. I need to get a new PC, and I'm considering ordering a Dell with Windows XP Pro. There doesn't really appear to be a cost difference - am I an idiot for buying an "old" OS that will be 'obsolete' soon? (Although I believe it will be supported for a while, especially due to the business community) I want the machine to run as fast as possible - nothing frustrates me more than a bogged down PC. I do a lot of image editing (My digital SLR takes 10.0 megapixel pics, so the image files are large), and sometimes some music editing, so I want maximum performance. I was looking at some Dell Inspirons (the desktops are called Inspiron too now, the Dimension name is gone) - 2.2 - 2.4 Ghz Intel Core Duo, 3-4 GB ram, 128MB video card, etc...
Any opinions?
thanks...
