Windows XP can see 3G of RAM, I have a couple systems with that much, it can also run in dual channel mode if you match the memory properly. I agree that 2G is probably enough, though. There is a problem with the 32bit versions of XP and Vista in addressing over 3G of memory, maybe that's what was meant?
Also, though one may not notice the difference in day to day use, different memory speeds do actually run at different speeds as long as all of the memory in the system is the same speed - if they're mis-matched, they'll all run at the slowest speed.
If you get XP Home, it doesn't come with the backup utility installed, which you can get around by getting something aftermarket, but you can also install it from the XP install CD, google for how to do this.
One thing to consider, you can only get (from what I can see on their web site) XP on two desktops, the Inspiron 530 and XPS 210, so that could be a factor.
I have XP home, MCE, and Pro on machines I use, as well as Vista home premium. I don't see a huge difference between them all in terms of usability, there's just a learning curve to Vista if you're used to XP.
There can still be hardware issues, especially if you're trying to keep old hardware and use it with the new system.
