Go with XP.
I build computers, repair a ton of them and have worked in the PC biz since 1993....
Vista is the same pig as XP. However with Vista you get way more lipstick. My professional opinion is that Vista is nothignn more than a resource hog update to XP and brings virtually nothing to the table that you NEED to have. Therte is a significant performace hit when loading Vista Vs XP on the same hardware, and no advantage in running the Vista.
*IF* you are going to buy a upper end system with a powerful processor, fast board, big video card with lots of video ram and lots of system ram, then Vista is ok.
There are some niceties to Vista, such as the TV features carried fwd from the Windows Media Center Edition, however, I repeat that there is nothing that Vista brings to the table that you NEED to have.
128mb video card would slow Vista down considerably, for Vista you really want 512 or better.
Disabling Vistas Aero interface improves performance a bunch.
good luck is whatever way you go....
