I didn't ask Saab to get involved other than to reaffirm that no diagnostic fees may be charged.

Repair codes are part of the problem. Many items don't have repair codes, especially on Saabs. The previous service manager at this dealership had worked for BMW for many years and thought BMW's were easier to diagnose because almost everything gave repair codes.
