Ive lately wondered the same with warranty work. My sister has a black '06 9-3SS which has had no mechanical problems at all, but has had its very fair share of cosmetic trim issues. The only non trim related repairs have been faulty gas cap and positive battery cable.
She had taken the vehicle in a year ago to dealer #1 (1hr away) and had some items replaced under warranty and her 30k service done. They came out to tell her the battery was defective and the car would not start (had always been fine in the past) and she would need to pay $178 for a new one. She called me to ask and I said to tell them it is covered under the bumper to bumper warranty until 50k miles and it should be free. The dealer said they would need to "call Saab to verify". In the end it was covered by Saab.
Fast forward 6 months and the car starts to be slow to start, I went to do a battery load test and found that when the dealer installed the new battery they did not install the battery acid drain tube so acid had leaked onto the positive battery cable and it was full of corrosion. Took it to dealer #2 (1.5hrs away) since #1 said they were booked solid for 3-4 weeks (only one Saab tech) Took it there for a number of other trim items (the second set was pealing). They returned the car and said they had replaced the cable. Line item showed they ordered and installed the cable, part number and all.
Upon inspection I found the OLD cable was just wrapped in electrical tape and covered with cloth tape. A bit irate we took the car back to them and went right to the service manager and shop foreman. They both agreed it had not been replaced and they "would make it right".
I just wonder is Saab had to foot the bill twice for the cable. How about the "defective battery" which seemed to work just fine prior to service. Im guessing they paid for that as well. Seems weird when some people have to fight Saab to pay for some things when dealers here seem to want to double dip (have the customer pay AND charge Saab)
