I hope I didn't sound rude - that is not what I intended... You seem to have enough knowledge to be able to successfully modify your gear, and I'm glad to hear that you've had positive results. My comments were meant to address a general audience (the majority of whom may have never touched a soldering iron, but might still like to run cable through a wall) not knowing what specific gear they own. For that audience, I don't think it is wise to start modifying crossover parts.
No doubt, an electrolytic cap or iron core coil is technically inferior (and distortion is just a part of it). But there are many parameters that need to be considered. The cap is a pretty easy switch, so long as the voltage rating of the new cap is the same or higher (or the circuit was carefully analyzed) and the circuit wasn't tuned by test (unlikely aside from the high end). Inductors are more touchy because wire gauge is a variable, and depending on where the inductor is in the circuit, it may need to be very low gauge *or* it may need to be a specific resistance (a common optimization), and the resistance of an iron core + air core the same value and gauge will not be the same. The ability of a novice to evaluate these details is questionable. Add to this, the cost of passive crossover parts available to the hobbyist (particularly inductors), the significant anomalies and distortion in most low end drivers used in low to mid end designs, and imho, the average consumer is probably better off buying higher quality speakers where everything improves in unison. But that's just my opinion, ymmv...
