Maybe we're to blame

Maybe we're all too smart for our own good, or at least Saab's own good. Anyone who knows anything when it comes to cars knows depreciation is the big expense, so you buy used and the longer you keep a car the cheaper it is to own. The most diehard SAAB fans on this board typically DON'T BUY THEM NEW. I've had 15 SAABs over the years and never bought one new. We're irrelavent to SAAB, we've done nothing to help them. The other scenario is people who buy a new one and then keep it for 10 or 12 or 15 years--they don't help much either. SAAB has been humping it's butt to build long lasting cars and actually working against their own interests. In the 80's I sold SAABs, VWs and Hondas and I can tell you longevity is a tough sale and only a small handful of people really, truly want it. What new car buyers really want is a car that will be bullet proof for 4 or 5 years, and then they want something new. That's why companies like Honda are constantly coming out with new products and redesigning their cars every 3 or 4 years. You simply are not going to be successful as a company if your customer base won't buy your product new or only buy once a decade. SAAB has struggled from day one because they chose to appeal to a small, ecentric segment of car buyers that just don't buy cars often enough. We have at long last met the enemy, and the enemy is us.
