I think Subaru buyers are a completely different crowd. Subarus appeal to people who equate 4WD with safety. Except for the WRX drivers, they tend to drive their cars extremely conservatively, at least from the ones I've seen in the Midwest and New England. Many on this BB have noticed that the Subaru does not have the build quality or the "robustness" of a Saab.
Certainly, I fit your description of a Saab owner that likes the longevity and good build quality of a Saab. I've only bought used. But my two neighbors who have Saabs have bought new. Many more neighbors have Subarus than Saabs, however. Nationwide, I think there just weren't enough people who appreciated Saab for what it was, or for whom the European view of car ownership, which you discuss, wasn't a factor. Saab buyers, either new or used, haven't been that plentiful.
