I own two and both were bought new but at large discounts: a 2001 9-3 SE with a sticker of over $35K that I got in Jan '01 for $26.3K with tax and license, and a 2006 9-3 SC 2.0T with a sticker of $30K that I got in Jan '07 for $23.6K including tax and license. I never would've bought the cars without the discounts.
I intend on driving both into the ground. The '01 has 163K miles and that ground is getting closer; the '06 has 30K miles on it and I hope to let my now 8-1/2 yr old drive it in high school. We'll see.
I feel bad for anyone who paid near sticker price for any SAAB, especially those convertibles around $50K. Absurd! Of course, I think it's insane to pay $50K (in after-tax income, of course) for any car -- it's a number that's just way out of my comfort zone -- and that's why, even though I like the new design, the new SAAB 9-5 will be just a dream car for me.
Unfortunately, cars are just a disposable commodity, and most people have figured that out by now. Buy cheap and then toss it. I figure it's just a metter of time before we'll only have choices of Korean, Chinese, or cars made in some other cheap manufacturing locale like Brazil.
Get yourself the best low-mileage used SAAB now and keep it for 10 years.
