I never said Saab should do what Honda, as an example, does. What I said was that the customer demographic they appeal to is the source of their problems. Honda is successful precisely because of the type of customer they appeal to--customers who want new cars on a regular basis. Saab's approach to cars is what I call the European model of car ownership--ie you buy a car, maintain it very well and drive it for ten or twelve years and 200K. All of the European makes used to have this philosophy--think of the way a Mercedes was built in the 70' and 80's. They were like tanks, you could drive one a million miles if you had a mind to. But the economic prosperity of the last twenty has gotten buyers out of that mode of thinking. All of the Europeans have abandoned that approach and are now into the mode of constantly coming up with new models and gismos. All of them except for Saab. Saab buyers are a small group of contrarians who still subscribe to the European model, and unfortunately there aren't enough of us, and we don't buy cars often enough to result in success for any car company. And I'll give you an example of a car company who does it right and is very successful--Subaru. They build very durable, long lasting cars and like Saab there is a dedicated fan base who probably only buy them used. But they know it's the new car buyers who keep the lights on. The 2000 Outback was a huge step above the previous model but by 2005 they came out with a new model that was a huge step above that one. And for 2010 they have another new model. And yet the cars are all very similar mechanically and have a lot of continuity. They give the new car buyers good reasons to buy new ones and yet manage to still appeal to the people who put 300K on them. Personally I've always liked long model runs for a number of prefectly logical reasons, but since I'm not a new car buyer, it doesn't help Saab a bit. And I think that's why they're in trouble.
