while I am generally all for freedom to do as one chooses, as an owner of an old house + some knowledge of restoration carpentry, there are times I wish there was a little more historical commission clout to protect homeowners from themselves... with an old house, it seems a shame to tear out stuff that has lasted hundred(s) of years + with a little care would last hundreds more to replace with modern "low maintenance" junk that will last 10 or 20 years before it is replaced yet again with modern junk. The big one I see locally are historic leaded windows in old growth frames replaced by vinyl. Once you tear it out, you can never go back! Even from an energy efficiency standpoint, a small investment restoring the old windows gets them 90% to the same spec as the new ones (especially since most homeowners go for the cheapest vinyl windows they can find once they see the real cost of it).
A few years back, I tore off much of the aluminum soffit + fascia trim pieces on our house to find beautiful, but rotting moldings underneath - the aluminum had trapped water behind it + was rotting the structure. Nice. Lazy previous owners put it up there to avoid painting! Caused me 10x the work to restore...
Well maintained wood construction can last a very long time. Sorry for the rant.
James...
