... the underground cable part especially... those people do need to go back to oil lamps!! re the white buildings, well, where I'm originally from most were white, and have gone to other colours in recent years. I kind of like the range of colours, though I have heard some mildly lament the shift, and though I suppose it affects the look of the area as a whole, imho it doesn't matter. That said, in some cases specific very old houses would look better white (than say, dark maroon + bright orange)... but to me, that's should be up to the owner and their (possibly lack of) taste...
paint is easy to change. tearing out windows or trim hand made by relatively skilled craftsmen hundreds of years ago out of old growth lumber is a real shame... can never get it back... happens all the time around here. People in my current neighbourhood regularly buy houses for half a million just to tear them down + build McMansions, usually aggravating their neighbours in the process... seems illogical to me...
