But the old house people in the village (historic district) are truly manic, and the ring leaders are dictatorial and strident. It's a religion to them.
Their latest game is trying to get the rest of the town to pony up $2.5 million to pay for putting all the power, phone and cable lines in the village underground so it will look appropriately historic and colonial.
I think old houses are wonderful and do value the craftsmanship in them, especially in the interiors. But when someone buys a house, what they can do with it shouldn't be mandated by a bunch of busybodies. Some historic towns in the U.S. go so far as to say houses in historic districts can only be painted white. But if you peel back the layers of paint you often find the oldest layers to be reds, greens, yellows, blues, anything other than white.
Whatever. It's why I won't live in a historic district or any type of planned/governed community.
