Looks like you've gotten a lot of great advice already, but I figured I'd put in my 2 cents as well. '94 900 TC and a '97 9000 Aero here (as well as a '03 9-5 Aero wagon).
If you are going to be doing any types of long trips, I would say the 9000 is the better car. More refined, more modern, less turbo lag, and has all the luxuries you'll want for a road trip. Not that my 900 wouldn't be a good road trip car, but being an older design, it doesn't insulate you from the road the same way. The 9000 handles well (make sure you check shocks/bushings or renew them if you want the car to really feel strong on the road) and is about as practical as they come from a space/cargo perspective.
That being said, make sure you keep up with maintenance. I bought my '97 knowing that I would do a suspension overhaul..new Sachs shocks, strut mounts, bushings and ball joints all around (the car has 140K on it), and it feels like a brand new car. I also replace the shift linkage which also made a huge difference.
All three of my Saabs are great in their own ways. For you, it sounds like the 9000 is the best choice. My 900 is used for quick trips around town and 30-40 mi trips to the beach. Would I drive it from LA to SF or to Vegas? Unlikely...
