While I won't disagree that a stick is the preferred choice in a 900 or a 9000, the autos aren't necessarily that bad for what they are... the c900 autobox mainly just needs 1 more gear... a 3 speed is just too much of a fuel hog... but (when working) it actually shifts pretty decently in that you can really move around the shift points... it's not smooth like in the 9-5, but it performs ok for what it is... the 9000 got an extra gear, so I'd be surprised if it was worse...
in terms of the fragile-ness... regular fluid changes are key + seem to be the downfall for most owners... those who kept up from day one seem to get good longevity, but it's true they are not perfect... manual trannies are the weak point in a c900 also... every car has a weak point... when the engine can easily go 300k miles or 500k miles, the "weak points" may still be pretty good relative to other cars... (amazingly) there are c900 owners in excess of 200k miles on autoboxes!
