a 2 hour flight from NY to Australia could happen.
We'd all love to know the type of vehicle, what materials are used to build it, the propulsion system (jet, turbo ram jet, rocket, ion drive, warp drive, anti-gravity drive) passenger capacity, type of fuel(s) required, and whatever else you think is necessary for this to work. And don't forget the economics... will such a plane be able to be operated profitably? That is, will there be enough people who want to get to the other side of the planet in 2 hours to justify developing and building enough of these planes to be profitable?

NASA has been trying to develop a turbo/ramjet/rocket engine for 20 years--the idea being to use such an engine in a craft that could take off and land like a normal airplane but with engines that could change their mode of operation based on altitude-- and can't crack the code to make it a reality. Carrying sufficient amounts of the different types of fuel is a real problem. The private sector is free to do the same, but also doesn't seem to be making much progress.

I think it is certainly possible to have a craft that could do such a flight, but I think it's a big leap beyond current technology, especially for normal use, such as daily passenger flights.

But since we're talking fantasy transportation systems, how about teleporters?
