Did you notice the cars were imported to sell to Americans in all those decades, not the other way around? If a ticket for private space-line ride from NYC to Sydney could not be sold because NASA would not allow the private launch (or even the testing of it), how would any American take a ride on that from NYC? American consumers were by far the largest buying block in the post-WWII world. Like I said in my previous post, for decades, anything that couldn't be sold to Americans simply had to feed on a much lower trough. The government ban on private launch made it impossible to sell the service to American consumers even if anyone comes up with the solution. The investment horizon would be entirely different.
NASA was bidding against all would-be employers of space engineers all around the world. Why do you think so many NASA engineers were/are foreign-born? NASA pays more!
The proof that without NASA intervention space exploration would have taken a different route and probably progressed more is quite simple:
1. The talks in the 1950's was Hilton/Sheraton hoping to open orbital hotel in the year 2000 . . . not some ridiculous moon shot that Werner von Braun was dreaming about.
2. Companies like Hughes formed space system divisions as early as 1948, before NASA founding in the 1958. Then the ban on private launches outlawed their service/product.
3. As soon as that ban was lifted in 2004, the private sector came up with a much more efficient launch system than the NASA/Soviet/von Braun idea of big rockets stationary launch from the ground dense air. The Virgin solution of launching rockets from carrier planes in thin air 50,000 feet up is a much more fuel efficient launch. Its goals of rapid long distance travel with "orbital experience" on the way is much more likely to be useful to consumers quickly than the ridiculous moon shot and cumbersome SpaceShuttle. Almost all the technology involved has been available since 1960. The NASA projects have been a huge detour and delay in real consumer space travel for half a century.
