using car prices as reference point, as illustrated in previous post. Over all these years, the BLS methodology has changed several times. Using the methodology prior to the Clinton era revision (i.e. the methodology used for most of the period under discusssion), the current inflation rate would be multiple times the current BLS published number (refer to John Williams' Shadow Stats, not saying the previouis methodology is necessarily more reliable).
That's why I used both gold and car as reference points. It's a fallacy to think there can be a reliable inflation index. Different sectors of the economy have different price movements. $80k and $200k (and even $22k) are relatively close groupings when put on the logarithmic graph against $1710. The difference between $22k and $200k is less than a doubling in inflation rate over the same time period. The early 1990's change in BLS methodology can easily account for the difference.
BTW, if you really check through BLS methodology, the hedonic adjustment would take budget service cost instead of first-class as that is the more economic substitute, thereby understating the inflation.
