I agree that time, not mileage is likely the big factor wrt battery replacement. But it can be likened to other major repairs, and all cars wear and need some big items over time.

Plenty of cars need a new or reman transmission between 100K and 150K. Assuming it's not DIY, that easily goes for $1500 to $3000 depending on the vehicle. And then the car is good for many more miles. It's not unusual for a Saab to need a head gasket and if you're paying that out of pocket that can run a grand or more with other bits being replaced. Paying to replace a clutch also runs about $1500 on a lot of cars. It seemed a little silly to do the clutch in my '96 9K last year (at 183K), but it was lots cheaper than a newer car and the old beast runs just fine. But it was still a major repair.

While a Prius battery pack sure ain't cheap, there will be ways to do it more affordably as these cars age. A bigger concern is that the battery pack is something else that can require a big expenditure: it wouldn't be fun to have to do a Prius tranny AND a battery pack!

Like you, we buy most of our cars with a bunch of miles on them, and then keep them several years. (Our first Saab went 20 years.) It's always cheaper to buy used and maintain than to buy new, and conventional technology generally has a lot fewer "gotchas" than new technology. But a few years from now hybrid technology will be old news and repairing them will be business as usual.
