I buy them younger than you do, but keep them a long time. It helps that I drive under 10K miles a year. Do 85-90% of the work myself. Could do more, but run my own biz and there isn't always time.
Have the same questions about the hybrids, although I would consider one for my wife, who's out and about every day (my office is in my house). Still, I think a diesel is a better buy and gets similar economy. And they are durable.
For electrics, a Volt-style car, with a gas engine as a generator makes more sense, or the Tesla style battery array, in which dead cells can be replaced easily.
But your cars, with 100-200K on them are not all that unusual for their mileage. Big, understressed engines will run a long time. Then again, my 9K just passed 190K with no major issues other than normal service and wear and tear, which did include a clutch at 183K.
