I don't disagree with that, and one thing is that the Saab system we've seen so far is still quite heavy on ICE. I think though that one could develop a car that was primarily EV: a completely electric drivetrain, possibly with no transmission at all (eg pancake motors) with a very simple low maintenance diesel generator to convert fuel to power for long haul trips. I believe the PML Mini prototype was along those lines. Whether or not that specific company's platform is viable is perhaps debatable, but I think the basic concept has some merit + simplicity that could hold up well in the long term. So that is basically what I am hoping for. I agree, a prius style parallel drive train is complicated, significantly combining the worst of both worlds, + it is amazing that they do seem to be fairly reliable in spite of this - probably a testament to the good engineering/manufacturing capabilities at Toyota.
