The typical electric fork lift has only about 3 to 4kWh electric bill per hour of use. Since the lead acid batteries have charge/discharge effciency of only about 50%, that 3-4kWh electricity going into the battery only leads to 1/4 coming out for conversion to mechanical energy in that same hour.
I have no doubt the gasoline engine will be replaced by something someday (gas turbine, fuel cell, etc.), but it's a ways off and pure electric is probably not a viable alternative at all for most American car owners due to the lower energy density of batteries compared to hydrocarbon fuel. Electric batteries have to carry all its reactants as well as waste. Hydrocarbon fuel (gasoline, diesel, propane, natural gas) OTOH only brings about 1/4 the total weight of reactantS (the other 3/4 is oxygen from the air) and does not have to carry the aftermath of reaction back home for recharging, as CO2 and Water vapor is recycled by the earth's oceans and high pressure high temperature mantel back into hydrocarbon fuel. It's the ultimate nuclear energy and geothermal, as the high temperature high pressure mantel is due to nuclear decay energy inside the planet and tidal force interaction with the moon.
