I agree, there are hurdles... I'm not designing those systems so I don't really know the extent of each hurdle, but I don't disagree that some may be very significant. On the unsprung weight, supposedly these added a few lbs per wheel, which is not insignificant, but not as horrendous as I would have thought. Beyond that, I would defer to the engineers designing the stuff, but it would seem that there is some interest from various manufacturers. That said, it might all be primarily for show. That we aren't already driving around in cars like that implies that there are significant impediments... that said, the approach does address a number of significant downsides to existing EV designs, so it is interesting to watch...
One might think, ok, well lets downsize the motors to be about 50hp/wheel to arrive at typical Saab/Volvo performance numbers (200hp instead of 640hp/2000lb-ft)... but your point about braking could become much more significant then, negating some of the simplicity of the system. So much depends on the actual engineering and the specific system... and that was my point.
