leasing makes for very expensive personal transportation. You pay for using a car you don't own and at the end of the term have nothing to show for it. Like renting an apartment, only worse. Buying a new car is even more insane since you get to take the big depreciation hit. I drive maybe 10K a year, which makes me prime for leasing, and I could write 30-40% off, but I don't want the monthly hit on something that doesn't make me money.
The other side is that there isn't much new (that I can afford) that I'd want to make payments on, and they all seem overpriced. So I just buy used, tweak 'em a bit and play with them.
I like Justin's approach. And coincidentally, a used XJR (he has an '03) is on my list, along with a Saab 9-3 Vert. I could get both for much less than I'd pay for a whole lot of new cars that wouldn't be anywhere near as much fun to own and drive. And at 10K or so miles a year having a used car be down for repairs would be no biggie.
But that's just me. Ya gotta do what works for you.
