Yes, in most cases (imho) leasing is smarter than buying new because you only pay maybe $1k or so as a premium vs buying new over the term and you have the option to walk away for a problem car that might be hard to sell (maybe underwater). Otoh, as NoSnaab points out, you have the option to buy out the lease if you want (and you know all the history just as if you bought it new to start with)...
That said, leasing or buying new from a financial perspective is more expensive than buying used and repairing, so long as you don't do anything stupid with the repairs (like seriously break something DIY, or pay waaay too much for stupid little stuff at a dealer)... Maintaining 3 saabs DIY + saab indy is for us cheaper than leasing 1 econobox!
