Leasing is great for people who like having something new and under warranty and don't mind monthly payments. It's not especially cheap, as you still wind up paying registration and road taxes on a new car, as well as insurance.
I don't like car payments, so prefer not to make them. It costs ~$1700 a year to insure all of 4 of our used Saabs. I've spent about $2,000 this year on repairs/service on all four (but I do need to put snow tires on one of them soon, and another needs an exhaust.). So say $3K or so across 4 cars for this year. Not bad at all, IMHO. No doubt they'll cost more next year--a couple sets of tires will be needed-- but so it goes!
It seems to me that leasing can work out well for cars that have a residual higher than the buyout, but is that always the case? Are all leases now written so you can come out ahead? If that's the case it might be worth a closer look.
