A common misconception about leasing

Sorry about the "know" verses "no" but we're in Napa, CA all week and forgot my password. Leasing is nothing like renting. In simple terms if you buy a $30K car then sell it when it's worth say $15K, you have "something to show for it" ie the $15K. When you lease the same car you only pay the difference between the new price and what it's worth ata given point. You don't get the $15k back because you didn't pay it the first place? At that point you have the option of buying a nice three year old used car you know the history of at a fixed price that's usually better than retail or you can bail and buy something else.
There's a lot of wrinkles to buying used and all cars have problems as they age. I owned four 9Ks. They had timing chain/balance shaft problems, heater core problems, clutch slave issues(one of mine had four over 140K), DICs, auto boxes that failed for no known reason, and plenty more. Every model Saab has built in problems that eventually get to be known issues, though often after you own it. Same is true of all cars. I had a BMW 325 that broke it timing belt at 60K due to an oil leak that was very common. Subarus have head gasket problems that are very expensive to put right. My point is there is some value to having a fixed monthly expense when it comes to cars. If you're sweating the payment then no you shouldn't have one. But I guess it's all relative. If you go out to eat twice a week at a sit down restaurant, you could easily drop $400 a month. To my mind $250-300 a month is a small price to pay for easy breezy no hassle driving.
