I know this is against all the logic we see everywhere, but I have always put the best tires on the front because they are the ones I steer with, that get me up hills in snow, that are the first to hydroplane in the rain, and that do 80% of the braking. And with ABS I don't think the worry of the car swapping ends under heavy braking is the big deal it once was. And with most cars FWD and biased towards understeering, having the rear end come around is just not all that common, unless the driver is hooning around anyway.
OK, if the older tires are getting down toward the wear bars, maybe put them up front and burn them up. Just get them off before you have to drive in lots of rain or any snow. But otherwise put them on the back where they won't wear much and put new ones up front. Especially with tires that are 50% worn.
IMO, a lot of this so-called rule was created and perpetuated by the tire industry (and retailers) to sell more tires and avoid lawsuits because someone someplace had almost bald tires on the back and new ones up front, spun the car, got hurt, and sued.
