I agree. 50% is still a lot of tread. Why waste it? It's not like we're talking about bald tires here, plus he already has a dedicated set for the worst conditions (snow). I would run the new tires on the front and the old on the back and maybe they'll even wear out at roughly the same time and you won't even need to rotate them.
