I think what you're asking is how you can beat "the system," and the answer is you can't. Cars are getting increasingly complex and there's no way around it. When I was selling Saabs in the mid-eighties they were considered extremely complex cars with lot of gizmos that were sure to be nothing but trouble. But it turned out they weren't and DYI'ers figured out how to keep them going. The fact is the technology in cars works pretty well and I've given up trying to buck it. I like adaptive cruise, lane keeping, emergency stop, keyless entry, power tailgate, etc.
I had a '04 Outback H6. It was very complex and they seem to have a lot of baked-in problems--there are cars that are much better. I like Volvos but they aren't simple and have always been pretty pricey to maintain. I wouldn't bet the farm on one being better than a Subaru. I think Honda's and Toyotas are about as good as it gets for a daily driver. I would get the newest one you can swing, take good care of it and bail when it gets close to 200K. My CRV does everything my Subaru did, is every bit as good in snow and light off road, has good seats and is surprisingly fun to drive. And I average 32 mpg, which better than any the dozen Subarus I've had in my custody over the years.
