Funny thing is that the early Subaru pushrod engines were pretty much bulletproof. (I used to have a 1980 Subaru. Never any problems with it.) Those things would run near forever if the cars didn't rust away around the engine and you didn't mind about 60 raging horsepower under the hood.
Subaru's head gasket problems with started with their overhead cam engines and continued for a ridiculous amount of time. It was not really fixed until timing chains replaced belts, I think in 2013 for the Outback. (I have read that turbocharged models fared better due to better gaskets.)
Later models seem OK. The wife purchased a new 2017 Outback in late 2016 (it's what she wanted) and it's been fine, just not particularly inspiring to drive. Same with others I know who have bought new Subarus in recent years.
From what I've seen though all late model cars are rolling electronic nightmares and not anything I want to deal with. I'll be sticking with Saabs myself as long as possible.
