I have a 2014 S60 5-cylinder with almost 220K (bought as a CPO) and a 2016 S60 4-cylinder with 128K (bought new), both automatics. I also have a 2006 9-3 SC with 160K and a 2010 9-3 SS with 199K, both manuals and both bought new.
1. Both Saabs are dramatically more fun to drive, perhaps because they’re manuals. I have not owned a Saab with an automatic. The Volvos are competent freeway cruisers, very comfortable on long drives with great seats, minimal rear leg room, powerful AC, etc. Have done numerous LA to Phoenix and Tucson runs with no issues. Not cars you’re going to throw into a corner on a mountain road. Both are nice looking.
2. I prefer the 5-cylinder Volvo engine to their 4-cylinder. The 5 seems much smoother and refined; the 4 seems noisier and more raw. Both have plenty of horsepower and torque; passing on a two-lane road is not an issue. Swedecar had to repair a balance shaft issue on the 2016 4-cylinder.
3. The 2016 S60 does not have a dipstick so you have to check oil level electronically. It either shows ‘max’ or ‘min’ with no intermediate level. Annoying!
4. The current Volvo CPO program includes unlimited miles if you drive a lot. Consider buying in the Sunbelt to avoid rust issues.
5. If looking used, prices are still high on S60s and ridiculous on V60s. And there are some real ‘caveat emptor’ Volvos on AutoTrader and cars dot com. Review the CarFax and call the service shops noted therein to save yourself from buying a good looking money pit.
