I love turbo Saabs and haven't driven a turbo BWM yet, but man those straight sixes are sweet engine. I had an e30 325i - good power everywhere in the rev range, super smoooth, and pulled hard to the redline while sounding like a turbine. Decent economy too. The turbo rush in the Saab is just as fun, but very different, and I'm guessing that's been beaten out of the modern BMW turbos. I guess BMW had to modernize their engines to keep up with the latest in economy/power/emission but it is a surprising turn for them. After all, they stubbornly held onto the inline engine when everyone else switched to a V6, and I don't care how balance-shafty they make a V6 it's ultimately a compromise design that never would have been popular except for front wheel drive packaging and will never feel or sound as sweet as an inline 6.
