It is easy to do with resettable "average mpg" gauge.

When you coast _in neutral_ your engine turns at much smaller rpm - which reduces friction losses significantly. It will be more economical to power up a hill and then cost downhill in neutral. Even better if you shut the engine completely off going downhill.

But anyway - all this is irrelevant to the discussion. My point is that instantaneous mpg gauge is useless. If all that you take from that gauge is that you need to drive slower to get better mpg - maybe you do not even need the gauge at all? But if you trying to find the most efficient way to to drive while maintaining the same average speed - the instantaneous gauge will tell you nothing. Especially when the usefull 20-30 mpg values take only ~1/5 of the full scale.

I am one of potential new BMW buyers and this instantaneous mpg gauge is a major turn off for me.
