In the Jeep the "Eco" feature is essentially a vacuum gauge (it also has a digital average MPG). You try to keep it lit as much as possible. If you really concentrate you can keep it lit 95% of the time. It makes quite a difference in MPG. You could certainly do the same with the needle gauge. Most people are much bigger lead foots than they realize especially if you're used to Turbo Saabs, BMWs etc. That's why your needle gauge swings all over the place uselessly. You actually can keep it in the zone if you accelerate slow enough (pedal bikes will dust you, other cars will hate you). You'll be amazed by the mileage you can get even in town. You'll learn a lot about driving for MPG and develop little tricks to stay in the "zone." I use the cruise control as much as possible even on surface streets--you'd be surprised how much you work the throttle back and forth if you don't (the gauge tells all). If you have to slow on the highway don't hit "resume," hit set and slowly work back up to speed. It's actually kind of fun to see what kind of mileage you can get. It takes a lot of concentration and I don't drive like that normally, I was just curious what a tall, heavy brick of a vehicle was capable of just by making changes to the "nut behind the wheel."
