I find econometers extremely useful, especially for long trips. When I drive my BMWs long distance, I use the econometer more than any other gauge, basically trying to keep the needle hovering around 30 mpg. This means open throttle going downhill and very light throttle going uphill. I wish they had a cruise control that would keep the mpg constant rather than speed.
It is especially helpful when I use a roof mounted cargo box. I can easily keep my fuel consumption around 30 mpg when driving my 325i with a cargo box. Without paying attention to the econometer, I get about 22 mpg with the cargo box...
