my comments are influenced by where I reside and recreational pursuits - if you want some decent off road capability Subarus provide that as the ground clearance is critical. Having said that last year I went up the the capitol lake trail head - it's a road off of Snowmass Creek Rd that turns into a 4 wheel drive road and has a pretty steep rough patch near the parking area. My Hyundai SFS was spinning it's wheels and I had to lock the diff to get up the road but upon arrival there were the usual pickups, JGC, Xterras, 4runners, LR4 and a few outbacks but interestingly enough a Prius. They must have traversed the rough part of the road and slowly inched their way up the road.
25 yrs back I used this area a few times and you'd see 3 or 4 cars but this time parking lot was almost full to capacity - couple dozen cars. The worst part of it though is after a long hike in finding that Capitol Lake is now pretty much fished out.
