Subarus were popular in Maine in 1980 when I arrived here, and have remained so. People like them because they are perceived as practical and good in winter. My wife had 2, they were stations wagons, had room for dogs and other stuff, and with AWD and snows were good in winter. That's all she needed. Plus, they have no sporty or luxury pretensions (other than the WRX and a couple of Outback variants) and that sits well with a lot of practical, verging on granola types. Saabs were popular in Maine for many of the same reasons (you would almost never see an Aero in Maine, and I would not call my '01 9-5 wagon "sporty"). That's why a certain demographic gets Subies, not marketing.
I don't care much for the Subies I've driven - the seats kill my back, whereas there's no problem with the 9-5 or A4 seats; and Subies don't get particularly good mileage.
I'm hoping the A3 Tdi hatch shows up on these shores (though I also hope my A4 lasts well into the future).
