The 3.0V6 in the 9-5 is a completely different engine that doesn't suffer from some of the I4 ills (sludge, multiple PCV updates). Many consider the 6 more reliable than the 4 and if you're the right owner (someone who doesn't want to modify for higher performance, someone who doesn't mind a little more weight on the front end, someone who will have a mechanic work on it rather than DIY) a V6 could be the engine for you.
The only big issue with the 6 is the requirement for RELIGIOUS 60k mile timing belt & pulley changes to prevent serious engine damage if the belt breaks (Saab pays for the first belt & labour at 60k but not the pulleys) - but this is an issue with ANY interference-design overhead-cam engine (my '87 Nissan pickup was exactly the same!).
Don't rule out the 6. Another local Saab owner has the 6 and it makes for a beautiful ride without 4-cyl vibration at idle.
