Not to completely discount your mechanic's opinion, which must be based on something, but a 9-5 wagon, especially 2002 and later, is a great car. As long as you have it checked for engine sludge and make sure it has a record of frequent oil changes, it's a car you can easily take past 200K miles and enjoy it every day.

In addition to all the benefits the other posters have noted here, it also has the benefit of being the most beautiful wagon every made, IMHO. I'm trying to think of any other wagon that looks so good. It's a rare case where the wagon looks even better than the sedan. Sleek, modern, fast-looking, with the best rear section design ever. The fact that it gets great mileage, has a huge cargo capacity and is very safe are additional advantages.

You will have to fix small things along the way, as with any car, but the basic mechanicals are very sturdy and reliable.
