Ours is an '03 Linear, now with 56K on it. We've had it a year and it has been painless. Comfortably holds two adult size kids (14 and 19) and two adults on a long ride, has good power and handling and gets 32 mpg on the highway (24 local). And it will take a hit in an accident. IMO, there are no Japanese alternatives.

It's a CPO car and we've used that once for rear shocks. Who knows, there could be more issues down the road, but such is life. We drove a Suby Outback when looking but after a 30 minute test drive couldn't wait to get out of the car. Small, jiggly ride, minimal back seat and not enough carrying capacity. And not great gas mileage, either. The shock with the Suby was that you really don't get much for your money other than AWD. Big deal. The Volvo X70 is nice but if you think Saabs can be expensive to repair, try a Volvo. We had one (OK it was a 940 T Wagon) that was the worst car I've ever owned and bled us white with repairs--at under 80K miles. Never again. And that lovely AWD tranny is known to detonate around 100K or so to the tune of $5K+.

The other Euro options are Audi/VW, BMW and Mercedes. All nice, but bring money. The Saab costs less to buy, the same or less to own, but because of the lousy resale value is a better buy. And Consumer Reports even likes the 9-5.

Just make sure you get maintenance records so you know the oil has been changed a lot and that the latest PCV set up has been done. You'll be fine.
