I looked extensively at the XC70 Volvo compared to the 9-5 Aero wagon. I decided to stay with the Saab for the following reasons:

1.) XC70 is heavy and grossly underpowered, plus it's pushing 4wd which makes it even worse.
2.) Long term maintenance costs on 4wd cars are usually higher. They wear tires faster, and suspension and driveline repairs are very expensive b/c the 4wd system is mechanically complicated. For example, replacing the fuel pump on an XC70 takes 8-10 hours of shop labor b/c you have to drop the rear axle. This is a common repair on those cars, if you read the Volvo BBS's.
3.) Resale prices for XC70's are RIDICULOUS. I refuse to pay $30-32,000 for a 2 year old car with 45,000 miles when it was only $38K new.
4.) The backwards facing rear seat in the back of the XC70 is "not for on road use" b/c of safety problems in rear end collisions. FOr me this extra seat was one reason I was considering the XC70, but when I learned this it became a moot point. The 9-5 originally was supposed to have the same 3rd row seat but in 1999 they removed it from production b/c of rear impact safety concerns.
5.) I wanted Xenon headlights and a Nav system. It is nearly impossible to find a used XC70 with these options, even though they were offered from 2004-on. Most XC70's were leased as base models, and very few are out there with these options.

The Volvo does have a couple advantages, like more storage space between the front seats, a higher ride profile (if that turns you on), and 4wd if you live in an area where the roads aren't plowed or something like that.
At the end of the day I think the maintenance between the two cars is similar. I have had 5 Saabs and 1 VOlvo (2004 V40 FWD) and my experience for reliability and repairs has been very similar between the cars.

Hope this helps. I did alot of research on this.
