you're mechanic may be steering you away because he doesn't see many 9-5's in his shop and doesn't want to invest in the training time only for you. we take our 00 sedan and 02 wagon to a saab/volvo shop, and they've commented often how well 9-5's in general have been holding up over the years. people unfamiliar with saabs still think our 2000 is a new car.
a more comparable car to a 9-5 than a volvo xc90 is an R70 sportwagon. but then you could put aside the thousands you save by buying a used saab instead and repair your car for years on end.
For any used car, I'd set aside 1000 for fixing little things that the previous owner saved for you, including stuff like performing the last major service, finding a new wagon cargo cover, replacing missing gravel shields, etc. Is what we did with our wagon, and it's been trouble-free since.
