This sort of disinformation really annoys me. Of the known trouble spots of the 9-5, none are unique to the wagon. The only recurring wagon-related complaint seems to be rear shocks and/or camber problems. Mine's camber is all over the place, heavy negative camber on the rear, but my tyres wear evenly and have given good mileage so far.
The SID is a poorly made unit, but it can easily be repaired for no cost every 1-2 years as you lose pixels again.
DIC is a problem, but was generally recalled so shouldn't be a hassle. Mine blew and it was replaced free well out of warranty.
I've got a 2000 Aero and I think it's fabulous. Only slight annoyance is the roughness of the engine just off idle. Aside from that it's a great value used car, and has (touch wood) given me 2 years of trouble free use so far. Fast, comfortable, economical and safe.
As for the 3rd row seating someone was talking about, check out several photos getting around showing 9-5 wagons after big rear-end accidents. The rear end crumples significantly, allowing occupants to be very safe in the passenger cell, even being able to open all doors after a 50mph rear-ender. Active head rests do their thing too. I wouldn't fancy being in the rear zone though - that is designed for baggage and protecting the occupants. Saab knows safety and don't offer it as an option for good reason.
Cheers
Steve
